Do The Super Eagles Need Mikel Obi Against Iceland?

Nigeria take on Iceland on Friday, seeking to salvage their faltering World Cup campaign but wary of the Nordic team’s capacity to go toe to toe with their supposed superiors.

Super Eagles’ captain Mikel Obi has declared he is ready to give everything to ensure they beat Iceland in a must-win clash at the Volgograd Arena in Friday,  Mikel, who was addressing the media ahead of their last training session in Essentuki on Wednesday evening, further assured Nigerians of a more positive outing against the Icelanders.

A major talking point against Croatia was the lack of creativity in the midfield.  Former Super Eagles midfielder, Austin Okocha has slammed Coach Gernot Rohr for his tactical approach in Nigeria’s 2-0 defeat to Croatia. He added that Mikel was not creative enough in the midfield, adding that the position he was fielded did not allow Moses and Iwobi do well in the flanks.

Many tactical analyses written after the 2-0 loss show the Super Eagles were sold short by Mikel Obi’s contribution to the team in the No.10 role. He occupied an offensive position but there was nothing offensive about his performance.

The question now is should Mikel start against Iceland on Friday?
