Manchester United Not Good Enough To Win The Premier League
Louis van Gaal does not think he has a squad capable of winning the Champions League.
The Dutch coach has previously won the tournament with Ajax and suggested at the start of this season that his Manchester United team could do the same.
But with a place in the last-16 still in the balance going into the last group game, the manager is less confident about his side’s chances.
“I don’t think that we are able to win the Champions League now,” he said.
“Maybe next year, when we strengthen our selection again, but now we have come as far as possible.
“Maybe we can beat everyone, of that I am sure because we have proven that already in the Premier League. But, normally, we are not good enough to win the Champions League.
Van Gaal is still hopeful though that United can pick up a positive result against Wolfsburg, even if the German side are not necessarily looking to win the game.
“We shall try to win, of course. When you are there, you try to do everything. But you also have to be realistic.
“I know they will not attack very much because they will continue [to the last 16] with a draw and that result would make us dependent on the PSV Eindhoven result [against CSKA Moscow].
“But I think we can always score goals – which is a little bit strange because we are not scoring too many. Every match, we have chances and in our European matches we have created more chances than in the Premier League.”
United bosses may not be too disappointed if they don’t make it past Wolfsburg.
A club source told the Mirror : “Our focus has changed. It is now 80 per cent Premier League and 20 per cent Champions League.
“Clubs in Spain, Germany, France and Italy are jealous of what we have in England – a competitive league where the bottom team next season will generate as much income from media opportunities as Barcelona and Real Madrid.”
