#OYINBOTORCHLIGHT – BARCELONA TO NAME ONE OF ITS STADIUMS AFTER JOHAN CRUYFF
Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu has announced that the club’s new B-team stadium will be named ‘Estadi Johan Cruyff’.
The current Mini Estadi will be demolished to make way for a new version at Barca’s Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper training complex, as part of the Espai Barca project.
Vice-President Jordi Cardoner also confirmed plans for a statue of Cruyff in the project and that the club had requested Carrer d’Aristides Maillol, the street where the Blaugrana’s headquarters reside, to be renamed after the Dutchman.
Cruyff, who died of lung cancer aged 68, signed for Barca from Ajax in 1973 and helped them to a first league title in 14 years in his first campaign. He stayed until 1978.
He is seen by many as the godfather of the modern Barcelona, coaching the club to their first European Cup in 1992 and instilling a style of football imitated by future managers.
