Scholes Slams Martial
The former midfielder believes the France international does not “live for goals” and has urged his former club to dip into the transfer market in January
Paul Scholes believes Anthony Martial ‘doesn’t look bothered’ if he misses a chance and has urged Manchester United to sign a goal-scoring striker in January.
United laboured to a goalless draw against PSV on Wednesday evening and missed out on the chance of securing their place in the Champions League knockout phase with a game to spare.
A win for United in their trip to Wolfsburg next month would guarantee their place as Group B winners but Scholes believes Louis van Gaal lacks a true forward in Martial.
“Attacking wise, they just don’t look a threat, they don’t look good enough, they don’t look like they can score goals,” the former United midfielder told BT Sport.
“Martial, for me, he’s still got a lot to prove goalscoring wise, he isn’t a centre-forward where he lives for goals, he likes to play outside of the box, he likes to drift to the left wing, he doesn’t look like he’s bothered if he misses a chance, he doesn’t look bothered if he scores a goal, where as a centre-forward, all you live for is scoring goals. He doesn’t look that type of player to me, and maybe Manchester United need to go into the transfer market for one of them.”[Goal]
